Foxconn plans to build 10-12 plants in India in 5 years
Digitimes

The Foxconn Group plans to establish 10-12 plants to create over one million job opportunities in India before 2020, according to chairman Terry Gou.

The rise of the domestic market and clients' demand for local production in India, including Apple, Microsoft and Xiaomai, has prompted Foxconn to consider building its production bases in the country, said sources at Taiwan's handset supply chain.

Foxconn's move also aims to strengthen its ties with local handset brands in India, including Micromax, Karbonn, Intex, Lava and Spice, which have seen their popularity continue to rise with plans to ramp up their local production.

To strengthen its presence in India, Foxconn plans to team up with local governments and businesses to set up incubators in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad to foster the development of innovative companies, said the sources.

Foxconn also plans to approach local channel operators in India, including Snapdeal, Flipkart and Adani for building up distribution systems in the country, added the sources.

LG expected to close down Shanghai-based facilities, says report
Digitimes

LG Electronics may close down Shanghai-based production faciliites called LGESH following a decline in profits and increased labor costs at the facilities, according to a Korea media report.

The facilities, which were established back in August 1995, were made from joint investments from LG and the China government, with LG putting forth 70% and the China government 30%. LG started off producing digital AV products at the plant and later added surveillance cameras to its product lines.

In 2014, the plant reportedly lost over US$8 million due to an increase in production competition in the area, coupled with rising labor costs and a strengthening RMB. If LG moves forth with closing the facilities it will be the first time to do so in China, the report said.

LG is also making adjustments to other production facilities in China in order to prevent similar losses from incurring in the future, the report added.
